Panchanga

Panchanga ("five parts"): the tithi (lunar day), Vara (week day), Nakshatra (the constellation sign of the lunar zodiac), yoga (luni-solar day) and Karana (half of tithi).

Tithi

the Tithi is the time during which the difference of longitude between the sun and the Moon changing in the next 12°. Day of the moon to the Indians is extremely important from a practical point of view, as by way of tikti regulated the performance of many religious ceremonies; it is the main component analysis or muhurta astrology of choice. In General, tithi represents the lunar energy as that identificeret with mental energy.

So even a little knowledge of the lunar cycles tithi and application of that knowledge, as many claim, gives wealth.

Each tithi or lunar day is equal to 0.9483 of a Sunny day; the lunar month is approximately 29.53 days. The end of the tithi is the moment in which the Moon is distant from the Sun by a multiple of 12°. When the Moon is at 12 degrees from the Sun, it's the end of the first lunar day or Prathama (Pratipada); when 24° - finished Ditya and so on; when it's 12° to the connection starts is amavasya (new moon), and when the 12° before opposition starts Purnamasi or Purnima (full moon).

the Definition of a lunar day or tithi: subtract longitude of the Sun from the longitude of the moon. If the difference is less than 180° is the bright half or Shukla Paksha; if it is greater than 180° - the dark half or Krishna Paksha.

Divide the resulting difference by 12° (or 720'). The integer part represents the number of tithis elapsed, the remainder of the current tithi, changing the past.

For example, define a tithi 8-8-1896 in 4h 10m 20s (L. M. T) in Bangalore (India).

First, subtract the longitude of the Sun (114° 40' or 6880') from the longitude of the moon (326° or 19560'). The rest - 211° 20' (12680'). It is more than 180°, therefore - the dark half (Krishna Paksha). When divided by 12° (or 720'), the integer part of the result is "17" which means the current 18th lunar day (or the 3rd lunar day of the dark half).

440' (7°20') 12° has been completed, before the end of this tithi is left 280' (4°40')

If this remainder is multiplied by 24 and divided by the difference of the daily motion of the Sun and moon, we get to the end of the current tithi.

for Example

  • daily motion of the moon is 11°47'
  • the speed of the Sun 57'
  • the difference is 650' or 10°50'

When multiplying 280 by 24 and dividing by 650 we get: (280 x 24)/ 650 = 10h 21m. Adding the result (10m 21m) for 4h 10m 20s, get 14h 31m 20s - the time will end when the current and the next tithi in Bangalore 8-8-1896.

Nakshatra

the zodiac consists of 27 constellations or nakshatras often razvivaem lunar houses, 13°20' (or 800') each.

In the example with tithi, the Moon is in 25°59'46" Aquarius: = 10 characters 25°59'46" = 325°59'46" = 19559'46". Divide by 800 = 24 remainder 359'46". I.e. the 25th Nakshatra, Purvashadha. 359'46" have been passed by the Moon in this star, and remained there until the end - (800' - 359'46").

Yoga

Yoga is the period during which the joint motion of the Sun and moon amounts to 13°20'. Each almanac Panchanga contains a column that specifies the duration of a yogi, which is only twenty-seven.

Yoga is a combination of subtle effects on our bodies; the right use of rules helps to remove the germs of disease and enjoy health and life.

the Formula for calculating yoga Surya Siddhanta: (Longitude of Sun + longitude of moon)/13°20'(or 800'). We take the data shown for tithi:

  • Sun's Longitude 114°40'
  • moon's Longitude 326°0'
  • the Amount 440°40' = 80°40'= 4840'

When dividing 4840' by 800 we get 6 whole and 40 in the remainder. So, vzaimoponimanie of the Sun and moon corresponds to our example 7th or Sukarman yoga. 40' of this yoga have already passed, there are still 760'. To set the time when the yoga ends, divide 760' for the sum of the daily motions of the Sun and moon (0°57' + 11°47' = 12°44' or 764') and multiply by 24. (760 x 24)/764 = 23h 50m - else it will last.

Karana

Karana is half the tithi (lunar day). There are 11 Karan: (1) Bava, (2) Balava, (3) Taulava, (4) Tatula, (5) Garija, (6) Vanija, (7) Vista, (8) Sakuna, (9) Chatushpada, (10) Naga and (11) Kistochka.
